Preparing for your podiatry home visit

Patient and carer guide

Once your appointment is confirmed, this checklist can help you and your podiatrist make the most of the visit. A family member, carer or support worker can help you get ready.

Have these ready

  • Your usual shoes, and any orthotics or foot supports you use.
  • A current medication list and relevant referral or treatment information.
  • A comfortable place to sit, with access to your feet.
  • Your questions, and a support person if you would like one.

Before the appointment

Confirm the arrangements

Check the date, address, contact person and payment arrangements with our team. Ask about the visit fee, any travel charge and the cost of any separately agreed report or equipment. If a provider or plan manager is paying, confirm any approval needed before the visit.

Tell us about access and support needs

Let us know about steps, gates, lifts, parking, communication preferences, sensory needs or anything that may affect the visit. If you need help moving or transferring, tell us in advance so we can discuss the arrangements. Keep your usual safe support in place.

Gather relevant information

Have your medication list, allergies and relevant health information available. If you already have a referral, recent report or instructions from another clinician, ask our team whether we need it beforehand and how to provide it. Use the website enquiry form for basic appointment details rather than medical records.

On the day

  • Choose a comfortable seat with good lighting and space for the podiatrist to work. Tell us if you receive care in bed or a wheelchair.
  • Wear clothing that allows access to your feet and lower legs.
  • Keep the route to your seat clear where possible. Arrange for pets to be in another area during the visit.
  • Have the shoes you wear most often nearby. Include any footwear that causes discomfort.
  • Tell us what matters most to you, such as comfortable nail care, walking around the house or getting shoes on more easily.

During your visit

Your podiatrist will talk with you about your concerns and relevant health history, assess your feet and explain suitable options. The care provided depends on your needs and what can be safely managed at home. You can ask questions before agreeing to treatment.

Before the podiatrist leaves

Check that you understand the advice, any footwear or exercise recommendations, and whether a review is needed. Ask who to contact if your symptoms change. With your consent or appropriate authority, relevant information can be shared with your care team.
